Reading Specialist
Under the direction of the site principal, the Reading Specialist will implement the District and
school philosophy, goals, objectives and activities relating to all programs and policies of the
assignment. The Reading Specialist is responsible for providing direct instruction individually or in small groups to ensure student learning and academic success in reading.
Major Duties and Responsibilities/Performance Areas:
Supports primary teachers in the appropriate identification of students in kindergarten through grade 3 needing reading intervention
Provides one-on-one and small group reading instruction to students needing reading intervention
Works with classroom teachers to push in to the class for reading support, as needed
Plans and uses appropriate, research-based instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of identified students in the area of reading
Uses assessment data to drive instructional decisions on a daily basis
Develops and implements daily lesson plans and small group activities, consistent with California State standards and current research methodology
Provides students with specific evaluative feedback
Communicates effectively with students, teachers and parents
Organizes the educational setting effectively including non-instructional aspects of the classroom
Reacts with sensitivity to the needs and feelings of students
Professional Responsibilities / Adjunct Duties:
Assists teachers with assessment of students to identify primary grade students academically at risk in the area of reading
Communicates with school personnel regarding student assessment levels and rate of progress when necessary.
Serves as a resource to classroom teachers to ensure that the specialized needs of students are met.
Demonstrates responsibilities including, but not limited to; parent communication, data collection, attendance at meetings, and enforcement of discipline standards.
Participates in professional growth activities.
Collaborates with the site administrator to develop professional development to support classroom teachers
Supports and follows school regulations and Board policies.
Performs adjunct duties as needed.
Maintains effective relationships with community, administration and students.
Knowledge of:
Effective strategies to teach reading skills and comprehension strategies to struggling primary grade students
Instructional needs of English learners
Planning, designing and implementing effective, research-based differentiated intervention lessons in academic content areas
Multiple approaches to instruction and assessment
District data reporting and tracking systems
The use of technology in the delivery of curriculum and in the management of student data and assessment
Qualifications:
Valid California State Teaching Credential appropriate for the assignment, and
Masters Degree in the area of reading, or
Reading Certificate, or
Minimum of five (5) years of successful teaching experience in the area of reading intervention
Bilingual Spanish required
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

1. Mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgments and decisions.
2. Manual dexterity sufficient to write, use the telephone, computer, calculator and office machines at required speed and accuracy. Ability to identify and interpret communications in handwritten and printed materials, and on the display screen of various office equipment and machines.
3. Ability to communicate effectively in order to perform assigned duties and to exchange information in person, in front of groups, and telephonically.
4. Ability to observe, monitor, and manage student activities and other assigned duties effectively.
5. Physical agility to move self in various positions in order to execute duties effectively, which may include kneeling, walking, pushing/pulling, squatting, twisting, turning, bending, stooping and reaching overhead; physical stamina sufficient to sustain light physical labor and remain in stationary position for up to 8 hours.
6. Physical mobility sufficient to move about the work environment (office, District, school site to site) for sustained periods of time on hard flooring, climb slopes, stairs, ramps and to respond to emergency situations; physical strength sufficient to periodically lift and/or carry 20 pounds of materials or supplies; occasionally lift 40 or more pounds with or without assistance.
7. Occasionally push and/or pull a variety of tools, equipment, or objects weighing 80 or more pounds with or without assistance
8. Typically an indoor work environment.
