TEACHER ON SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT (TOSA)

Brief Description of Position
The Non Public School (NPS)/ Private School Education Specialist is part of the district office team that conducts child find, assessments, and IEP meetings for students attending non-public schools (NPS) and private schools. This position does not require direct SAI (specialized academic instruction) services to students.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
A. Educational Assessment and Individualized Education Plan (IEP) development and Individual Support Plan (ISP) Development
1. Assists the director of special education (or designee) in the establishment and operation of the district NPS/ private school IEP team
2. Assists in processing NPS and private school student referrals to special education services
3. Provides educational assessment and coordinates the development of IEPs and/or
private school ISP meetings as appropriate for students enrolled in NPS programs or private schools.
4. Consults with appropriate specialists such as speech and language therapists, school psychologists, classroom
teachers, school nurses, NPS and private school staff etc. in IEP assessment, meeting and implementation planning
B. Instructional Services
1. Provides services as outlined in the private school ISP for identified individuals with exceptional needs.
C. Additional duties
1. Performs other duties as assigned.

Director of Special Education (or designee)
Qualifications
-Special Education Credential.
-Demonstration of an ability to work independently and to function as a leader of others. This implies the ability to get along well with others.
-M.A. and/or other advanced preparation in special education is desirable but not required.
-Ability to communicate in Spanish desirable but not mandatory.
Physical Abilities:
• Sufficient vision to read material with or without vision aides;
• Sufficient hearing to conduct in-person conversations with students, teachers and parents;
• Sufficient voice volume to be heard at normal conversational distances;
• Ability to stand, sit or walk for extended periods of time;
• Physical, mental and emotional stamina to endure stressful conditions;
• Use hands to touch, handle, reach, feel objects, controls, or tools;
• Occasionally lift or move up to 20 pounds;
