The Program Specialist will provide coordination, consultation, and program development for special education students in the district's Special Education Program. The Special Education Program Specialist is directly responsible to the Director of Special Education.
DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:
Under the direct supervision of the Director of Special Education or designee, as part of a multidisciplinary team; provides assessment, consultation and/or treatment to children with disabilities who qualify for occupational therapy services, and consults with staff about students who may have occupational therapy needs.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
• Evaluates students using standardized test, observation, and/or clinically derived surveys in areas including perceptual-motor skills, motor coordination, sensory development, and muscle strength.
• Participates in Individual Educational Plan (IEP) meetings as required.
• Develops treatment plans and goals.
• Provides direct occupational therapy to students.
• Confers with school administrators, OT manager, teachers and site staff concerning individual student progress toward the occupational therapy portion of student Individual Educational Plan goals.
• Assures compliance with governmental regulations, codes, restrictions and reporting requirements concerning those Special Education students affected by his/her services.
• Designs and delivers training and other related in-service programs to staff and parents.
• Maintains therapy rooms and equipment.
• Prepares records and a variety of professionally written reports and documents in a timely manner.
• Attends district, county and Special Education Local Area Plan Agency meetings as required.
• Travels to district sites and students’ homes as required.
• Collaborates in the implementation of individual educational programs with children with occupational therapy needs.
• Consults with staff regarding general education students with fine and gross motor skill needs.
• Performs related duties as required.
EDUCATION AND CREDENTIALS:
• Typically a candidate can meet the educational qualifications by graduation from an accredited program in occupational therapy.
• A current license from the California Board of Occupational Therapy is required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE of:
• The intellectual sensory and physical development of children.
• Content and development of occupational therapy assessments.
• Provisions of educationally necessary occupational therapy plans.
• Applicable treatment modalities and theory for the pediatric population.
• Occupational therapy techniques commonly used with severely and physically disabled.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
• Read and write at a level sufficient for the performance of assigned duties including independently producing professionally written reports and documents.
• Understand, interpret and provide educationally necessary therapies.
• Keep and compile records and reports.
• Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
• Communicate effectively, tactfully and persuasively, both orally and in writing.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with parents, district employees and outside contractors.
EXPERIENCE:
• Experience in interpreting, designing and developing specific educationally necessary program plans for children with occupational therapy needs.
• Experience working with children as an Occupational Therapist, with experience working in a public education setting preferred.
