CLASS TITLE: CARPENTER
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Maintenance Manager, perform journey-level carpentry work in the maintenance, repair, construction and alteration of District buildings and facilities; assist other maintenance personnel with projects and work as assigned.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Perform journey-level carpentry work in the maintenance, repair, construction and alteration of District buildings and facilities.
Construct, alter, repair and inspect structures including partitions, counters, doors, window frames, scaffolds, forms, shelving, stairways and fences.
Construct cabinets, bookcases and a variety of furniture. Maintain and repair woodwork, in District school facilities.
Draw and design plans for alterations and new construction; assure compliance with applicable codes and regulations; maintain plans and drawings of construction plans.
Write specifications for construction bids and needed materials; prepare bid packages and assist with evaluation of bids from contractors; lead contractors on job walks.
Assure proper handling and reporting of asbestos concerns and issues; research documentation to investigate or verify specifications on previous asbestos inspections.
Operate a variety of carpentry equipment including lathes, saws, planners, shapers, joiners, sanders, power and hand tools and a powder-actuated tool for driving pins into concrete and steel.
Assure compliance with building, health and safety codes and standards.
Sharpen and maintain hand and machine tools; maintain and service woodworking equipment.
Work from plans, oral instructions, sketches and blueprints.
Assign and review the work of other maintenance personnel temporary helpers as assigned.
Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF:
Trade tools, equipment, materials, methods and techniques used in skilled carpentry and in general maintenance and repair.
Appropriate health and safety precautions and procedures. Technical aspects of field of specialty.
Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies. Basic recordkeeping techniques.
Requirements of maintaining school buildings in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
Federal, State and local building codes and regulations.
ABILITY TO:
Perform a wide variety of skilled journey-level carpentry in the maintenance and repair of District facilities and equipment.
Prioritize, schedule, assign and review work.
Train and provide work direction to assigned personnel in the performance of a wide variety of duties related to the carpentry trade.
Interpret, explain and apply codes, rules and regulations involved in assigned maintenance activities.
Effectively and safely operate a variety of tools and equipment used in the skilled carpentry trade.
( Interpret blueprints, shop drawings, sketches and work orders to others.
Understand and follow oral and written directions. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Estimate labor and materials costs.
Make arithmetic calculations quickly and accurately. Work independently with little direction.
Meet schedules and time lines. Maintain routine records.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
Operate a District vehicle. Perform heavy physical labor.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: two years journey-level carpentry experience.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California driver's license, evidence of appropriate automobile insurance based on DMV regulations and insurable by the District liability insurance carrier; qualify for a powder-actuated tool license within the first year in this class.
