CLASS TITLE : GROUNDS SPECIALIST
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Grounds Specialist Lead, perform skilled and semi-skilled work in gardening and maintenance of district grounds and equipment; receive general supervision from the Maintenance Manager or designee. Perform complex grounds maintenance functions, activities, gardening and grounds keeping duties. Plan, install, repair and maintain playground equipment, and automatic irrigation systems. Operate and maintain a variety of power grounds, and gardening equipment.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Perform a variety of semi-skilled to skilled gardening and grounds maintenance and grounds-keeping duties.
Plant, cultivate, prune, shape, trim, water and spray trees, shrubs, hedges and plants. Mow, edge, trim and prune landscape areas.
Prepare and apply appropriate fertilizers and herbicides to maintain landscaped areas in a disease-free condition (under the direction of the Grounds Lead).
Operate a variety of power ground equipment and tractors using a variety of attachments and performing skilled operational functions.
Operate hand and power tools and equipment including power mowers, edgers, and sweepers, riding mowers and other grounds equipment and tools; operate tractors, trucks and light utility vehicles.
Plan, install, maintain and repair automatic irrigation systems; set, adjust and maintain mechanical and electronic timers and controls.
Water landscaped areas by hand or by operating sprinkling and irrigation systems.
Clean the sprinklers and sprinkler systems.
Use hand tools to work soil and to remove weeds, undergrowth and debris from school grounds and landscaped areas.
Sweep walkways and driveways; pick up paper, rubbish and other debris; rake and hoe weeds.
Maintain tools and equipment in a safe operating condition and report need for repair to appropriate personnel.
Perform routine adjustments and repair work to power grounds maintenance equipment.
Operate sprinkler and irrigation systems; perform ground maintenance functions and activities to athletic fields, indoor and outdoor athletic activity areas. Prepare athletic fields and activity areas for sports events, including dragging, leveling, rolling, lining and other related tasks.
Assist in installing and making emergency repairs and adjustments to grounds equipment.
Repair and maintain grounds areas that are surfaced with concrete or asphalt; make repairs as needed and upon request.
Repair metal parts by using arc and acetylene welding process.
Construct playground facilities and equipment; make equipment safe for students to use.
Perform custodian and routine facility maintenance tasks as requested; clean gutters and roofs.
Repair fences, playground equipment, bicycle racks, outdoor play equipment, sandboxes and similar facilities or equipment, using hand and power tools. Set up and dismantle gymnasium and related equipment.
Recommend materials purchases to supervisor; research products and recommend best source for quality and price.
Maintain current records for all aspect of grounds care.
Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Grounds keeping and grounds maintenance methods and practices
Planning, installing, maintaining and repairing automatic irrigation systems
Safe use, maintenance and operation of grounds maintenance tools and power equipment
Native flowers and trees of the area and planting cycles
ABILITY TO:
Perform semi-skilled to skilled gardening and grounds maintenance duties for the District.
Use hand and power tools associated with grounds keeping and grounds maintenance work.
Operate and maintain power grounds equipment.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
Use independent judgment in performing grounds maintenance activities.
Maintain and repair automatic and manual irrigation systems.
Mix and apply chemicals to control weeds and assist plant growth (under the direction of the Grounds Lead).
Perform heavy physical labor.
Understand and follow oral and written directions.
Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and two years of grounds maintenance and grounds keeping experience, including one year of irrigation system installation and maintenance.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California driver's license.
Evidence of appropriate automobile insurance based on DMV regulations.
Insurable by the District liability insurance carrier.
